I have bone to pick with August. She’s a faker of a month. A poser. A bit of a bait and switcher. She claims to be a member of the Summer family, full of sunshine fun and pool parties. But, there’s something about her long, hot days that reminds me of the day after a party.
She’s a day late, settling in with the empty bottles, crumpled napkins and deflating balloons. All the fun is in her rearview mirror….4th of July parades, last days of school and family vacations…Ahem, more specifically, my family vacations.
And, September keeps peering over her shoulder with her long, yellow school buses and sharpened pencils.
Kinda makes me nervous.
Maybe August gets a bad rap because of the lack of holidays. No holiday luster adding some life to her ho-hum calendar. No themes. No traditions. No jingly bells or bows. No magical character decorating eggs or scattering four leaf clovers across her days here in August.
I know I am not the only one less than pleased with August’s yearly visit. Everywhere, mini vans are returning home from long road trips, tents are unpitched, kiddie pools deflated and displeased children are buying school supplies.
On second thought, maybe it’s time to cut August a break.
Maybe it’s not her fault.
Maybe August signed up for summer and got the short end of the stick?
Maybe she’s doing the best with what she was given.
Maybe she’s misunderstood.
OK, August. I am giving you a second chance. Show me what you got.

Have a special day in August and make an ice cream treat.
August called me and told me you need to get a bounce house.
If I recall correctly, when I was young August wasn't so bad. It was our last fun month of summer before school. Now school starts backup half way through the month, not after Labor Day... What's up with that?
But, September is a wonderful month with weather. August is the step sister to September.
(Not that step sisters are bad or anything...political correctness alert...I'm purely talking Cinderella type stuff here.)
If only!!! I wish school didn't start until Sept.!!! We start Aug 19th.
BTW - I think August has it easy!!! No holiday family dinners!
August in Australia is wonderful! Winter is easing, plants are looking happier, and it is still cold enough for some serious snuggling......
Probably why three out of my five were conceived in August. Lol.xx♥
Ooohhhh-August does have one major holiday! My birthday! School starts! That could be considered a major holiday if you don't teach! It's also my anniversary month! Party! Party! Party!
Good idea, and your post always make me smile, I'm going to give August a second chance too. I usually dread the ending of summer and heading back to work. I've got two more weeks to make August work :)
Ooh! Pick me! Pick me! . . . August has my birthday. And my mom's . . . and grandpa's . . . and nephew's . . . brother-in-law's . . . we could start a few "national" holidays! ;)
Looking forward to August. August means the teen goes back to school. ;)
I don't like August because it's the start of lightning season in Utah...and lightining terrifies me!
I think that if August had a gender then, she'd be a tired mother with a large brood of kids, laundry piling up and dishes in the sink. And yet, she'd be out on the hammock with as many squirmy kids as she could pile on, a lemonade in hand and a forgotten magazine on the ground.
Kind of like Sunday. Just a reminder that you got to make the most of it quickly!
Depends on where you live. Where I grew up in Maine, August was definitely the first month of fall -- hailstorms, early frost!
Ay ya ya! August is already getting darker in the mornings down here. So much for my morning run. Sorry thighs! My 4 year old is starting Pre-K in 2 more weeks and I'm FREAKING OUT! Does he know that I won't be in his life for 3 straight hours? I mean, won't he need me anymore? (Aren't you glad you don't have this crazy mom hanging outside of your classroom window?)
My best, Lynn
*member when you said "Hm...I wonder if blogging is a fall sport? I think you were right!" :o)
All I can think is August means Christmas is 4 months away....
...and swimmers itch. How's that for a combo?
At least August is moving along nice and quickly.
So clever! I love the personification of August. I think she's one hot biatch too.
This cracked me up...August is a lull for me. I love fall...
hahaha! so true!
August is probably responsible for the speeding up of time in general. It starts with her, I'm sure of it.
My daughter doesn't like August. August means back to school. Which on some days I'm so ready for. Then other days I know I will miss the girls being home.
August sucks. Too many hurricanes. September isn't any better.
I love August. I have an August birthday coming up, That I am not even dreading lol.
