Macaroni Madness

My preschooler is addicted to macaroni and cheese. She is a bit of a connoisseur, really. She can name that mac with just one bite.

“I see it’s Kraft again, Mommy,” she says with a pinch of mac and cheese snobbery.

She would be happy to eat macaroni three times a day.

Macaroni! Macaroni! Macaroni!

“Pickiness is typical at this age,” reassures my doctor.

However, her macaroni passion does concern me. Do you think this could lead to addiction?

“Been macaroni-free for 154 days, dude.”

Are there Macaroni 12 step programs?

“I have come to accept that I am powerless over Kraft.”

What about macaroni withdrawals?

“Just gimme some more mac, man! Just a little more….”

And doesn’t addiction sometimes lead to crime?

“Attention, shoppers! The Mac Bandit was last seen in Aisle 8. Keep your valuables…Um…I mean, your macaroni on your person at all times!”

You don’t think I need to worry about Black Market Macaroni?

“Could I score some Mac off ya, bro?”

What about Macaroni Obsessive Compulsive Disorder?

Prep the Mac. Eat the Mac. Clean the Mac. Prep the Mac. Eat the Mac. Clean the Mac. Prep the Mac….

Can a macrobiotic, macaroni diet effect your health?

“Don’t know what it is, Doc. Her skin tone has been so…well, orange lately.”

And can someone overdose on macaroni and cheese?

“Send an ambulance! My daughter won’t stop eating the macaroni!!….Oh….and…um…Can ya stop by Safeway? We’re almost out.”

After all, I would prefer my mommy meltdown to be over something more pressing than macaroni.

“What finally pushed her over the edge?”

“It was …It was…mac and cheese!”

One can’t live on macaroni alone. That’s why I thank my lucky stars she at least eats the occasional grilled cheese. Gotta fill their diet with some variety, ya know.

PS. Don’t worry…She eats a spare veggie or two… Well….ah…...If I bribe her with some mac!

Haha... I've wondered if they add an addictive substance to that mac & cheese!
You should see it around here when we mix in some cut up hot dog - it's like a holiday!

Where do you come up with this? It's hilarious.

Prayse is allergic to milk - so that solves our Mac 'N Cheese problem :) Although now she LOVES her "cheese" soy, rice, etc... She gives this little shrill of "Cheeeeeeese!" When she sees it.

Check back w/ me in a year and a half or so... you can share your 12 step program.

Lol, our toddlers are meant for each other.

We fight the veggie front by blending a little steamed or boiled veggies and mixing it into the mac n cheese. It's still cheesy and I can convince my son that we just changed its color because it's neat! Who doesn't LOVE green mac n cheese?!

Our kids are related. No joke! Love it!!!

The Girl used to be completely obsessed with mac & cheese too. Wonder if it is an age thing. The Boy was a reverse mac & cheese snob...he would ONLY eat the kraft blue box kind. Ugh!

The worst is when they order mac and cheese off a kids menu and it comes out HOMEMADE! Oh no, NOT the good stuff!

I missed your SITS day yesterday!! Seriously, I started to read the blog orphan post and was on the verge of laughing very hard, when my 7 and 9 year old children came to sit on my lap and proceeded to REFUSE to let me blog. Back to parenting 101 for me!

Hope you had fun!

I have a few macaroni addicts myself! What is it with that stuff?

Ash said...

Curses! Now I have to go make myself some mac and cheese.

I love that she's a macaroni snob. I've got an excellent restuarant for her when she's old enough - The Silver Fox.

Their mac and cheese would make you streetwalk to get a hit.

OK, maybe not such a good idea.

LOL!!
too hilarious! I think toddlerhood and food fixations go hand in hand...
and I'm sure we went through a macaroni scare of our own.

now, it's just our money they want...

Awesome post!!

Right now, mine is all about Vienna Sausage. She went into the cupboard the other night, got a can, and slammed it down on her daddy's computer desk and said "NOW"...

We've created a monster.

That's funny. The kids I nanny for are addicted to PBJ's. So annoying. Gotta get out the bread, gotta get out the PB, gotta get out the jelly (asking each time whether they want red or purple bc heaven forbid you pick the wrong color for that time). Make the sandwich, cut off the crust. Crumbs everywhere....blah blah blah.

I always keep some around the house in case the grandkids come over -- I've never met a small child who didn't like mac & cheese.

Astrid in Bristling Acres said...

That sounds like my nearly-three year old! She only wants mac & cheese. Ugh.

All three of my kids were mac addicts and I can say they do out grow it! I will never be able to eat it again for the rest of my life but minor detail.

My daughter loves mac & cheese, too. But luckily, she also loves veggies. We just mix em right in. Mac & cheese and peas is her favorite comfort food!

Oooooohhhhhhhh, that Blue Box...that lovely, lovely blue box that contains the Magic Kraft. I love it in all of its varieties--white cheddar, extra creamy, SpongeBob shapes--but I always come back to the original, the Cheesiest.

I must admit that I cannot practice portion control with the Blue Box. I end up eating it straight out of the pot.

My mom's Mac and Cheese is far tastier, and what I prefer, but there's just something special about the Blue Box.

Getting...hungry...must...practice...self...control...I'M HAVING A MAC ATTACK!!! NOOOOO!!

It's not Mac around here, it's pretzels! We have them instead of chips and I swear my kids swipe a handful ten times a day!

Cammie said...

too funny. In our house it is the same, only replace Mac N Cheese with
"sketti-o's"

Katie said...

My favorite is Easy Mac. I'd eat that all the time. I'm having mac & cheese for dinner tonight but I put peas in mine. Don't suppose you would get away with peas in the mac & cheese.

nikkicrumpet said...

LOL I guess you should be glad that it isn't a steak & lobster addiction!!!

My son is a macaroni addict as well!!! Refuses to eat anything but that!!!

Elizabeth M Thompson said...

My friend sneaks baby squash (you know, the little jars of organic baby veggies) into her daughter's Mac N Cheese, to add some nutrients without disrupting the taste. If you try it, add only a little to start with.

And don't worry, the Mac N Cheese phase doesn't last forever.

SoBella Creations said...

LOL My 2 year old eats a hot dog practically everyday. And when she's not asking for a hot dog she wants mashed potatoes.

My oldest hates it when I try to fix easy mac n cheese. She specifically ask for shells and cheese.

Femin Susan said...

Macaroni !!!!!!!! that too three times a day.

Bramblemoon Farm said...

We go through addictive phases. First it was fudge toaster pastries, but only the ones from Walmart or Meijers, others don't taste "right". Then it was frozen pancakes- EVERY stinkin morning. Now it's Cherry toaster pastries but ONLY from Walmart. And Mac and Cheese must have hamburger in it and can only be the kind that ISN'T shells. Seriously. I could not make this up:)

Heather said...

LOL! For the longest time, not only did my kiddo want mac and cheese, but it had to be the Velveeta shells and cheese, for which I'll admit to having the occasional craving but my husband can't stand. He is much more old-school with the powdered cheese stuff that you mix with milk and butter. So, now that Kiddo is a bit older and ever-so-much-more flexible about these things, Hubby has gradually switched her allegiance over to the super-cheap, powdered cheese, GENERIC version of mac and cheese.

I'm all "Dude, if I can mix bacon into it, I don't care how it was made." But this is supposed to be about kids and their m&c addictions, right.... hang on...

Okay, here's what I was going to say: When her pasta addiction was at its worst, I could occasionally substitute the M&C for a little dish I called "Cheesy, Peasy Rainbow Rotini" - I got the tricolor rotini (some of it is SPINACH! and TOMATO! and WHOLE WHEAT!), cooked it up, dumped in a bunch of peas and then liberally sprinkled grated parmesan over the top and mixed well. She was so distracted by the COLORS and the CHEESE that she barely noticed the whole wheat/spinach/tomato-ness or the peas. MWAH-HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

:)

Just be glad the cheap and easy Kraft kind will do. Me? I love the good southern kind- that requires tons of shredded cheese, butter, milk, eggs and a 350 degree oven!

At least she hasn't discovered gourmet mac and cheese with truffle oil!

Shamefully, I am the one in the house that holds a secret mac n cheese addiction. If it weren't for the "Others", I'd eat it everyday. But noooooo they want variety and nutrition and a balanced diet! One day, your daughter and I will open a restaurant that serves nothing but Mac N Cheese. We'll call it - Olive Garden. :-)
My best, Lynn
See you Monday!

haha, my 3 are the same way! although they go through phases where they love something for the longest time and then wake up one morning and just hate it!

Nana said...

Mac and Cheese huh? Mine is chocolate chip cookie dough. I find myself craving it.

Suzanne C said...

Too funny! It's the color..maybe the texture...it is good...and you can't hide any "secret stuff" in it because they can taste it a mile off!

You know what is wrong?

When a child doesn't like Mac and Cheese. Especially when their parents are dirt poor and hotdogs in Mac was a staple in their diet. I'll have to ask my son (he is now 25) if he eats it now.

Kristina said...

So... the variety from mac and cheese is bread and cheese??? :) You're too funny, and your daughter sounds like a hoot. :)

Mac and Cheese. An American favorite :)

Thanks for stopping by my blog :)

LOL. I know quite a few kiddos who might need to go through that particular 12-step program!

Unknown said...

Haha, that's too cute! Thank goodness my little one can't be quite so picky about his food yet or we'd be in trouble. Right now its just rice, oatmeal or mashed up something or other for him, and if he doesn't like it, well then there's always milk ;)

Queenie Jeannie said...

LOL! Super funny post!!

I remember my first child went through a hot dog phase. NOTHING but hotdogs and ONLY Oscar Meyer ones at that. Warm, cold, whatever....it's all she wanted. I sounded alot like you are now, but trust me, it will go away!

It really is the perfect food!

bwhahaha... I have a macaroni addict myself. I've just learned to embrace it and I LOVE LOVE the little microwave bowls of mac and cheese. SOOO easy.

Alisha said...

lol, that is kinda funny. That is the one thing I can count on my girls eating as well.

Apparently, my kids are freaks. My daughter wouldn't eat mac and cheese until they had been serving it for a YEAR at school. My son will still have nothing to do with it. Maybe he will be converted after he starts pre-school in the fall!

Sharlene said...

I think the orange powder is actually crack. A neon, cheestastic, crack. Have you tried Trader Joes Mac n cheese? I am personally a bigger fan of that than Kraft. You know, its classier.

i WISH my hurricane luka would eat mac and cheese. all he will eat is "taters" (french fries) and gummi worms. seriously.

I wish my youngest would eat mac -n- cheese. She will only eat chicken nuggets and hot dogs.

So, I started the "you eat what I give you". Her doctor says she will not starve herself. Okay, we shall see.

As Buddy told me point-blank before we were ever a couple - Ranch dressing makes the veg go down smoothly.

You probably need to seek help now for the little one... or they'll turn out like me - a 37 yr old that can STILL eat Mac & cheese DAILY!!! YUM!!!

Carla said...

HAHAHA!! I used to put the veggies IN the mac. One of mine took out the veggies and ate them separate:) He liked them 'covered' with cheese sauce but not 'touching' the noodles:)

Jaden Paige said...

hehe. You are too funny. Luckily, we're not there yet with my girl, but she IS getting to the phase where she doesn't want regular milk. Nope, it has to be CHOC-it. heh.

Macaroni and cheese can do that to a person. It is delicious!

Anonymous said...

Hilarious! I swear there is something weird in that Kraft powder. Those particles look very suspicious...

I have a friend whose son will only eat chicken nuggets. Drives her nuts since she is a vegetarian.

Macanoni as it is called around our house. It is the one thing my child will eat 5 times a day. I have resorted to adding cauliflower to it mashed up so she has no idea. Hadn't thought about adding meat to it though. I might just try that.
I think the 12 steps are needed here to. LOL

You're killing me! Best laugh I've had all day. :)

Believe it or not, I am so in the mood for mac and cheese. Of the orangey Kraft variety. Only one of my kids likes it. The other two will make a pretense of it if it contains cut up hot dogs. I throw peas in there too so as to not feel completely guilty.

Unknown said...

LOL This is too funny! My daughter has been addicted to peanut butter and jelly sandwiches since she was able to eat peanut butter and I've often wondered how she survives on pretty much nothing but sandwiches.
